CarbonRun Issues the World’s First Verified River Alkalinity Enhancement Credits

CarbonRun has reached a major milestone for river-based carbon dioxide removal: the world’s first issuance of River Alkalinity Enhancement (RAE) carbon credits. The credits were generated by CarbonRun’s Kvina River project in Agder, Norway and made possible through collaboration with Omya International AG, which supplied the mineral feedstock used in the project.
The Kvina River project was conducted under the Isometric River Alkalinity Enhancement CDR Protocol, a scientifically rigorous and independently governed framework that ensures carbon removal and sequestration on thousand-year timescales. The project adhered to robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) requirements and was validated and verified by 350Solutions, with credits issued on Isometric’s registry. The leadership and expertise of both Isometric and 350Solutions were critical to the project’s success.
This issuance demonstrates a strong partnership model for scaling high-integrity carbon dioxide removal. Omya’s early investment and long-term commitment to climate solutions have been foundational to this work. By supplying Biokalk 75, its high-quality limestone slurry used in the Kvina project, Omya played a critical role in moving RAE from research into real-world delivery.
“Omya is committed to using our natural mineral reserves to support carbon removal projects. The success of the Kvina project was the results of a strong collaboration between CarbonRun, the Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet) and the Kvina Kommune.”
- Nicholas Nelson, Vice President Sales & Marketing Life Science of Omya International AG.
The credits issued from the Kvina project will be delivered to Frontier buyers under an offtake agreement, fulfilling a vision first set in motion in 2023. Less than three years later, that early leadership has translated into verified, issued credits — a timeline that underscores what’s possible when buyers, suppliers, and developers move together with clarity and ambition.
“The first issuance of verified River Alkalinity Enhancement carbon credits on the Isometric registry is a defining milestone for CarbonRun. It reflects the belief and support of many partners, and it sets the stage for rapid scaling of the carbon removal pathway we’ve helped build. We’re grateful to everyone who helped propel us to this moment.”
- Luke Connell, Co-Founder and CEO of CarbonRun.
Together, CarbonRun, Omya, Frontier, and Isometric are demonstrating how river alkalinity enhancement can be responsibly delivered at scale — restoring ecosystems while removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This first issuance marks an important step forward, and one we’re proud to take alongside partners committed to long-term climate impact.
